Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations affecting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains especially affected by weather elements rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that such operations become unprofitable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
