Fresh analysis indicates that people who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a leading medical journal points out that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals buying these treatments must be cognizant of the potential of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a return to original weight within about a year and a half.
Weighing Approaches
The research, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.
Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Fast Rebound
Doctors believe the mode of action of the injections explains the amplified weight return.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls hunger.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this medication means appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Issue?
Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Testimonies
People who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful return of appetite.
"It was like something that goes on and you become extremely hungry," described a patient.
This challenge is worsened if patients have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Growing Interest
Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers stress that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated behavioural management.
