At least thirteen passengers perish and 98 hurt in train derailment in Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major government projects.

The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” stated the national leader.

The official confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Major Initiative of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose term ended the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his government's developmental agenda for the southern region.

Another massive train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in public projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, beating expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked ongoing concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a key rival party urged an prompt pause in the development and management of all similar projects.

This halt was suggested while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."

In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in total accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these vital projects.
