2K Hires Popular Battle Royale Developer to Revitalize Struggling Action Game Project Ethos

The renowned publisher has appointed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to direct the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently crafting the forthcoming over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.

Management Change Comes After Poor Response

The new appointee assumes the role of studio head at 31st Union following the dismissal of former leader Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to the game's lackluster unveiling last fall.

Recently, the company's top executive David Ismailer updated team members about this organizational change through an internal memo, which stressed that playtesting had shown the need for a more defined vision.

The president stated that the developers is now refining Project Ethos with a revised approach, aiming to satisfy player expectations.

Trend of Strategic Recruitment

The news mirrors a similar step taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they brought on Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to contribute to the BioShock development group.

Below is the entire message from Ismailer's announcement:

Team—

I know you all just wrapped up your gathering - I trust you’re as excited as I am with the recent updates. Previously I sent you all a update, I stated the following: “I am confident in this crew. You all are some of the most driven and innovative developers we have had the opportunity to partner with - and we’re excited for that collaboration to persist.”

With your dedication and versatility, especially over the last year, you repeatedly show that.

The gamer responses from last fall’s Project ETHOS demo was enlightening. It affirmed the potential of a roguelike shooter but made clear we still had improvements to make. It revealed the requirement for a sharper brand.

It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve progressed. You accepted the criticism to mind and revamped the title with a revitalized vision - one that’s ready to fulfill its potential to our fans.

The belief in Project ETHOS grows every day. To boost the remarkable progress you’ve made, I am thrilled to introduce the new hire as the new Lead of the team. Following a period of talks, Ben starts with us on Monday, October 20.

Ben’s guidance and expertise in the PVP shooter space is vast, having dedicated the recent years producing and managing some of the most popular titles in gaming, including the acclaimed shooter, and more recently, the battle royale hit.

Let’s together in greeting him soon. We are all eager to continue seeing the evolution of Project ETHOS in the months to follow.

David

Experience of the New Head

The appointee currently holds the role of executive producer and production lead at the renowned studio for Apex Legends. Brinkman earlier worked at major gaming companies in multiple development positions on the Call of Duty series, and, prior to that, had periods at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Title Information and Concept

Project Ethos was announced in October 2024 together with a public demo. Initially, 31st Union presented the game as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an innovative evolution on the category."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in real-time to suit your personal playstyle," the official summary states. "Face the rivals with unique powers, challenges, and obstacles that evolve every match. Will you safely extract with your collected items? Alternatively aim high, put it on the line, and pray your group can secure victory? The decision is yours."

The game lacks an official debut schedule or consoles, but enthusiasts can expect additional details as development continues.
